I think one of the main allures of ghost stories is the back-story of the haunting. Just what happened to corrupt a poor soul and chain it to this realm. There are many theories. The subject doesn’t know that they are dead. The subject has unfinished business. The subject is watching over loved ones. Whatever the situation happens to be, we are compelled to find the human face of it all.
When thinking about this, it’s natural to ask questions such as for how long the haunting will continue? Will it or can it ever end? Is the soul trapped and in eternal suffering in some kind of anguish-filled limbo? And, of course, is there anything we can even do about it?
Ghosts were humans once. They emotions they felt were real. Their problems mattered. Can that all just disappear?
